The winter months provide the best conditions for spotting some of Australia’s most exciting marine life on Lizard Island, perfect for divers looking to come face to face with curious Potato Cod at the world-famous Cod Hole dive site.

One of Australia’s iconic Great Barrier Reef resorts, Lizard Island boasts unrivalled dive sites and snorkeling with myriad corals, fish, clams and sharks to entertain. Divers can mix with green sea turtles and giant clownfish, and snorkelers are rewarded for little effort with 100-year-old giant clam gardens just moments from Lizard’s beaches.

Around this time of year guests can expect to see humpback whales breeching and fin slapping around the island. Many guests are lucky enough to see these displays from Osprey Lodge while enjoying breakfast.

Lizard Island has also welcomed back Robyn Pontynen as the General Manager after eight years, having spent time managing properties in Australia and safari lodges in Africa.

“There is indeed something magical about diving or snorkelling with the haunting song of the humpbacks reverberating through the water and filling your ears,” Pontynen said.

Fishing enthusiasts can charter Fascination III for a day of exhilarating game fishing. Fascination III offers unparalleled opportunities to explore these magnificent waters, not only for fishing but for snorkel and dive charters.

The continental ledge off of Lizard Island is the largest breeding region of giant Black Marlin in the world and fishermen from all over the world travel here every year to experience the greatest in game fishing excitement from September through to October, with this year’s 24th Lizard Island Black Marlin Classic tournament taking place from October 16th to the 23rd.

Guests looking for an indulgent getaway this winter can enjoy a complimentary night on Lizard Island with the current Stay Five, Pay Four offer. This winter deal includes all gourmet meals, selected alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, use of non-motorised watersports and dinghy hire.

The offer is valid until 31 August for travel through to 20 December, 2010.
